At the Annual American Diabetes Association (ADA) meeting, in Washington DC on 10 June 2006, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) launched its worldwide ‘Unite for Diabetes’ campaign, which was aimed at driving a United Nations (UN) Resolution on diabetes and at making World Diabetes Day (14 November) a UN-observed day before World Diabetes Day 2007. In the process, the awareness campaign aims to reaching 1 billion people with messages about diabetes action. Novo Nordisk is supporting this campaign with an ambitious effort focusing attention on changing the future of diabetes.
Access to diabetes care is a human right which should no longer be violated
On 20 December 2006, only six months after the launch of 'Unite for Diabetes', the General Assembly of the UN adopted, by consensus, the Resolution on diabetes. In this way, all nations have recognised the severity of the worldwide diabetes pandemic and have committed to urgently dealing with this.
As a result, the UN designates the current World Diabetes Day, as a United Nations Day, to be observed every year beginning in 2007, and encourages Member States to develop national policies for the prevention, treatment and care of diabetes in line with the sustainable development of their healthcare systems.
Lars Rebien Sørensen, president and CEO of Novo Nordisk said that "nations have acknowledged that the access to diagnosis, prevention and proper care of diabetes constitutes a human right which should no longer be violated."
Novo Nordisk will continue to take an active leadership in implementing the UN Resolution on diabetes by ensuring that action is taken and that each of all UN Member States establishes national policies on the treatment, prevention and care of diabetes.
In addition, in its efforts to explore practical ways of redefining healthcare around the needs of people with diabetes, the company will establish high-level groups of experts to facilitate new solutions for change and drive better health outcomes for people with diabetes.
Focus on children and youth
Novo Nordisk has chosen to support ‘Unite for Diabetes’ by focussing on the needs of children and youth, their families and social networks. Our focus will involve children who have diabetes today as well as children who are at particular risk of developing diabetes in the future. Our work will result in a special report, a Diabetes Youth Charter, that will document the issues faced by children with diabetes in countries around the world. We will work to give youth a voice in the debate through our Novo Nordisk Youth Panel and we will launch a new global DAWN Youth initiative in 2007 to lead national efforts to change the lives of youth with diabetes.
A symbol for unity
A strong symbol for the UN Resolution campaign has been created enabling everyone to engage in the vision of the UN Resolution: a blue circle which signifies unity.
