Novo Nordisk is governed by its Triple Bottom Line approach to business. This means that as well as being economically viable, we must protect the environment and be socially responsible in all our actions.

Impassioned world leaders
We continue to reinforce our position as the world leader in diabetes care, as well as investing heavily in research and development in order to find a cure for diabetes. Novo Nordisk also holds a leading position in haemostasis, growth hormone treatment and hormone preparations, where we are seeing great gains and exciting developments.

By protecting our global leadership we remain economically strong: allowing us to deliver to our shareholders – while at the same time driving change around the world by investing in science for people and giving back to local communities.

Committed to the environment
Environmental considerations are part of our business processes from discovery through product development and marketing, to consumption and disposal of the products after use – even if it means additional costs in the short term.

In 2006, Novo Nordisk voluntarily joined the WWF Climate Savers Programme, and committed to cut CO2 emissions by 10% by 2014. In light of the projected growth in production, this represents a relative reduction of approximately 65%.

In 2007, Novo Nordisk partnered with the Danish energy supplier DONG Energy, pledging to convert all energy savings into the purchase of green electricity supplied from a new wind farm. The aim is that by 2014 electricity supplies for all Novo Nordisk’s facilities in Denmark will be entirely based on renewable energy.

Social responsibility
Responsibility is more than a virtue – it is a business imperative and an investment in our future. In all our actions and decisions, we strive to act on our commitment as a corporate citizen.

Therefore we will not take a step unless we know the footprint we are about to leave on the world is the right one. We apply this thinking to every task we undertake. Our commitment to our employees – the people whose health care needs we serve – as well as the global society and the local community is unbounded.

We have several programmes that focus on giving back to communities that need help, like the TakeAction! programme – our employee volunteer programme, where employees get to develop and drive initiatives where they believe we can make a difference in the local or global community.
