Novo Nordisk in Clayton, North Carolina, is located on 264 acres southeast of Raleigh, the capital of the state and the location of the world renowned Research Triangle Park.

Approximately 400 employees work at the facility, devoted to the formulation, aseptic filling, packaging and distribution of insulin products. During 2007 the site completed construction and began assembly and packaging of the FlexPen® disposable insulin delivery device. We ship products to the United States, China, Europe, South America, New Zealand, and Australia. The site operates 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.

Process optimization in Clayton

We are proud of our accomplishments at Clayton. This is possible because of the excellent teamwork within departments and between groups at our site. Our process-centered organization is comprised of the following major business processes: Governance, Centers of Excellence, and Shared Services all designed to support our core processes.

The Clayton organization is comprised of Operations (Finished and Semi-Finished Manufacturing, Systems and Equipment Performance, Technical Training, Operations Planning), Business Support (Finance, Logistics and Warehousing, IT, Product Development, Safety/Environment, Business Services), People and Organization, and Quality (QA, QC Laboratories, cLEAN®, Process Support, Quality Systems Services, Quality Engineering). These groups perform as One Team, working very closely through all steps in the process to assure quality products and high production volume to meet customer requirements.

Six Sigma and cLEAN® process improvement methodologies have been implemented in all areas of the site resulting in outstanding lead time and productivity improvements over recent years, all designed to optimize work flow, work processes, and scheduling.

We are ISO 9001 certified. Through this quality management system, we will continue to improve our processes and gain even better customer satisfaction.

Engaged employees

Working to ensure that we create the environment for an engaged workforce is a major focus for this site. We understand that engaged employees contribute to retention, productivity, profitability, customer satisfaction, good safety performance, and naturally employee satisfaction. Through annual employee opinion surveys such as eVoice and Gallup Q12, impact plans are generated between people managers and employees. Then steps are taken to improve the way we work to address basic needs, individual contribution, team work, and growth.

Employees can grow and enhance their careers by training and development opportunities, promotion from within the organization, participation in project improvement teams, and more.

Through local, regional, and national wage and benefits surveys we ensure that we have a very competitive compensation package which also includes performance bonus programs for employees at all levels, based upon achievement of individual and team goals.

Social responsibility

Employees have many volunteer opportunities to support the Clayton community and surrounding areas. Novo Nordisk and our employees also make charitable contributions to many organizations. These include the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, United Way of Johnston County, American Red Cross, the local public school system, the Town of Clayton, and much more. Novo Nordisk donated land to the North Carolina Community College system to build a Workforce Development Center with a special emphasis on biotechnology training to support the current and future workforce needs of Novo Nordisk and other local industries.

We continuously strive to minimize resource consumption and environmental impacts relating to our production by using the best available technology, optimizing our processes, developing recycling schemes for waste materials and by managing emissions and waste in an environmentally sound manner in accordance with legislation and local requirements.
